Let's say it is possible to consistently beat the market through observation and good judgement. However this would become a time consuming effort.
Furthermore, unless you're some sort of legendary investor, you'll probably end up losing a lot of money sometime, or outperforming the market by a somewhat thin margin. Hell, it is very likely you'll do bad and do worse than the market. So why not simply tie with it?

It might not be diversified enough; you are pretty US heavy.
You could add VEU to spread things around the rest of the world, but you would have picked up a heavy concentration in Europe from the overlap between VTI and VEU
VWO might work then to balance things out a bit more.
