hi anon can you help me understand this situation. me and waifu made 158k in 2016, all on w2, paid helluva lot of taxes too. still uncle sam wants more money! it says on turbotax we owe 5.8k in federal taxes how is that even possible?

Did you fuck up and pick the standard deduction rather than itemizing? CA state taxes are high enough that you always want to itemize.
Also, you want to end up owing money (but in the safe harbor zone) every year, since the conditions under which the IRS pays interest are very hard to attain.
Take a look at your withholding, the default amounts are never good for anyone.
