How risky is trading currency?

just be yourself

very high risk.
assuming a diversified portfolio I wouldn't recommend risking any more than 5% of your portfolio in trading currencies. This is to protect you from wild currency swings and also to ensure you know what you are doing before you decide to put more into it.

i used to long certain currencies because they had a periodic swing they went up in the winter and went down in the summer. i could make serious enough money on it with low risk. but it's over now.
Are there any reputable people on the interwebs who made books or videos about trading currencies?
I've done it. Mostly spot trading. I wouldn't recommend it.

if you're looking for actual strategies that will give you an edge then no, for obvious reasons
if you're looking for academic books about FX, markets, pricing etc.. then yes

depends how much you leverage yourself
though you're unlikely to find yourself in +ev trades as a retail trader so your use of leverage then just dictates how rapidly you lose money
