>To report capital gains with turbotax you must get premier version
>with state return this totals $92 before sales tax
jesus christ do you people actually pay for this
does anyone have experience with other stuff? freetaxusa or letting credit karma do it sounds sketchy as hell so at this point all I can think of is filling it out on paper and mailing it in

Since I do a lot of family tax returns I prefer just to go with TurboTax. Like any good software package it will walk you through everything.

How many capital gain/loss transactions do you have? How complicated is your tax situation otherwise? Estimate how long it will take you to file by hand and decide if saving that time is worth $92. Also, search online for TurboTax coupon codes or see if your bank or brokerage offers a TurboTax discount. I think I get 20% off through Fidelity.

this year a single espp sale
still have to file a full 1040 with schedule d because of it
>>

Assuming you have the cost basis info handy, the Schedule D should only take you a few minutes to fill out since there's only one transaction. If your tax situation is otherwise simple (only one or two jobs, no itemized deductions), I'd just file by hand.

ok sounds good but then i have a couple questions based off what i read on the irs site

i have a tuition charge and 1098t, I CAN claim this as a deduction even if i take the standard deduction, correct?

my interest earned is below $1500 so I do not need schedule B?

When Turbotax screwed a lot of us a year or two ago by trying to force us to upgrade versions if we needed to claim capital gains, I switched to H&R Block. I paid $35 for the Deluxe Federal + state version on Amazon this year. Works great for me, but the most complicated thing I do is stock transactions and some MLP accounting. You can even import and convert last year's turbo tax files with little effort.
