How do developers sell their apps for millions of dollars? wtf?

By creating products people actually need/enjoy using.

this
theres a reason most apps people use are incredibly similar to eachother. map services, document readers, etc.
though the big shits are casual game cash shops, and licensing for pre-loading onto phones.

By putting millions in marketing and making them appear on the front of the appstore

make an app that provides a service to the user, but collects information and data for the app company to sell or collect and then it becomes an asset which makes the company valuable.
tinder, for example, isn't worth anything as an app. it is valuable because it collects personal data and tracks the movement of its users. it can then build a profile of it users and this is worth money.
big data, nigga! its the future.

It is not a >need.
You do not need appa to survive. It is literally a pure entertainment standpoint when it comes to them.
Make something entertaining for massive idiots
They build apps that already fit into an existing company's platform. This is why you can get venture capital to support an app that makes no money, because they expect you'll end up selling it to some other company that actually has a revenue model.
