yeah, it should prevent you from breaking the rule. if you turn it off you can place a fourth day trade, marking yourself as a PTD, and be locked out of daytrading for 90 days i think.
you have to keep track of your daytrades yourself though, because RH won't alert you until you've used them up.

a normal robinhood account is called a cash account.
you can trade with cash that is in your account. when you buy and then sell a stock the cash from the sale takes 3 days to "settle" before it can be used again to buy something else

this is a rule mandated by the SEC. you can learn more about it if you search 'free riding' on investopedia or something


Robinhood offers another kind of account they call Robinhood Instant. it lets you reuse the money from a sale immediately to buy something else. buying and selling something within the same day counts as a daytrade.
normally the SEC has a rule that youre not allowed to be a daytrader unless you have a minimum of $25k in your account. somehow robinhood instant gets around this rule for its small account users, BUT theres a limitation: you are only allowed 3 daytrades before you are labelled as a "pattern day trader" and your account becomes locked as a cash account again for 90 days i think (no daytrades allowed)


Anyway if youre on a cash account you dont have to worry. You can buy something and sell it in the same day with no worries. you'll just have to wait 3 days for your cash to settle before you can use it again.

I had an odd situation arise personally. I made a few day trades with a cash account, and then decided to upgrade to Instant. They gave me the upgrade, but now attempting to buy or sell ANYTHING (even if it's something I haven't already bought into) invokes the Day trader protection and won't let me complete the order.

I can buy and sell $100 worth of X ten times in a day until I reach the point where all my cash is "unsettled". I physically have no money now to buy again because its all stuck in holding for 3 days from my sells today. I made 10 daytrades but it doesnt matter because im on a cash account

Yeah I was reading about that. It really seems strange to me that they have the loophole where you can day-trade, as long as it dwindles your buying power.

Yes but you're limited by the amount of cash you have because you have to wait for your funds to settle.

If you have $100 in your account you can make 100 $1 day trades but you have to wait till 3 days later to use them again.

Pattern day trader rule does not apply to cash accounts, in case anyone was wondering. However it will take your funds 3 days to "settle" whatever the FUCK that means. (These rules are all stupid)
