Procurement is a fancy word for "ordering stuff." So it follows that you'll be ordering stuff for the city.
>>

What type of company is it?
http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Procurement_Specialist/Salary

You specializing in buying things for the company. It requires research and negotiation ability. Depending on the company, it may involve cold calling.

This is the same Anon with the pink ID. I was posting from my phone and it's a pain in the ass to type.

Procurement is like the Anon with the green ID said. You specialize in buying things for the company through shopping different sources then comparing prices and brokering a contract/purchase order for said goods and services.

I'll give you an example of procurement from my industry -- construction management.

Big boss comes in and says, we have a $100M project to build a building.

That means I have a little less than $100M in my budget (minus overhead of course) to buy everything we will need to build said building.

So I call five to ten concrete companies and have them quote me a price for X yards of concrete.

Then once I have all the quotes in hand, I do a comparison (what they call in construction a "green sheet") where you write out all the companies and their quoted price in a line. I take the lowest price from the handful of quotes that I receive from A Co., B. Co., C. Co, etc. and write that company a Purchase Order Contract for X yards of concrete.

Then move on to windows, doors, lumber, etc. in the same fashion until all the P.O.s and contracts are issued.

Then I follow up on those orders to ensure that they are still in the system, being fabricated, being put onto the truck, being delivered on time, ensuring that the stuff I actually ordered is what really arrives to the jobsite, etc.

You need to have good contract negotiation skills and follow up skills.

Yeah, this sounds like construction. I deal with this shit everyday from the general contractor's side. I am a civil project engineer for a water/wastewater treatment facility general contractor.
>>

Okay, thank you. That does help.

I feel I do have good interpersonal skills, and good with customer service. I've worked in retail, and I've done purchase orders for customers, and had to call vendors and installers about that kind of stuff.

But thanks again dude, I feel a little better about it.
>>
>>1721342

No problem.

Also, RFP is just a fancy acronym for "Quotes." Literally.

Materials are things like: concrete, lumber, piping, wires, conduit, physical shit to build with.

Supplies are expendables: tools, gas, office shit, consumable things.

Equipment are things like: pumps, generators, conveyor systems, etc. Stuff that lets you do stuff.

Thinking about it a little more, if it is entry-level then most likely you'll be tasked with being the follow-up bitch for a while until they trust you enough to actually reach out to different companies and get the best bang-for-the-buck under contract until you're trained up a little better.

They'll likely have the P.O.s and contracts in place. You're going to be the guy who calls to say, "We need the first 100 of 500 doodads by next Tuesday!" and, "We need that crew of Acme Servicemen here to fix/maintenance all the widgets in the plant by February!"

And the companies you talk to will all say, "Okay no problem!" and then they'll fuck it all up and you get to call them seven hundred more times to get them to do what they said they'd do the first time around.

And you'll do that with 900 different companies at the same time all day long.
