decide what you want, figure out what you need to do to get there, and develop a system that makes consistent progress on that path.

Knowing what you want is a form of motivation too.
I don't think 'motivation' is to be used only in it's memey motivational-speech 'Me against the world' form here but rather in it's most general meaning which is anything that drives action.
Just my two cents on the issue.

I want to have inaf money to do whatever I want. Most of the time I feel like a horse chasing a carrot but every now and then I buy myself something to remember why I do this (buy myself a nice pair of suits, jeans, shoes etc.)

I'm not the kinda guy who wants hookers and coke. I'm the kind of guy who wants big house, really nice car and few bucks in the bank so I don't have to worry about money from day to day basis.
