Are economics/finance majors a meme? Where is the true money to be found outside /physical sciences and engineering/? I heard cyber security is pretty lucrative now.

Also, how important is the university you attend? Do you need to be top 100 to even consider above $60k?

Pls help friendos, I don't want a meme degree.

I fell for the STEM meme.

economics requires Ph.D bullshit and finance requires certifications and exams left and right, but both are where the "true money" can be achieved given you have enough patience to put up with thousands of hours of grinding just to be on par
>>
>>1710281
Don't go after money, study what fits to your strengths and that you like. If you're smart and good, you'll find money anyways.

Only go to school if what you want to do requires a University to learn.

The University you go to is important, but you'll never be poor if you go to a low-end one, but you'll probably never be filthy rich either.

Economics is if you like money, and want to learn how people use it.
Finance is if you like money, and want to learn new ways how to collect more of it for other people.

>follow your passion, the money will follow meme

Fuck you and your shitty baby boomer advice.

OP, what ultimately matters in a course in university is, does it give you any marketable skill in the process of attending it?
A skill that can be monetized and is not super easy to achieve or oversaturated on this planet.
Don't waste your fucking time. I'd say the trades are always pretty good, people need electricians and plumbers. People don't need a personal banker or 2 bankers. And most people certainly don't need a personal economist, and even in a business the economist won't get chosen.
Everyone can be an economist, it's a philospy.
Finance? Pfft, you're going to be skilled but not specialized and you're not going to be hired over accounting majors.
Just don't waste your fucking time and CERTAINLY don't waste your fucking time while also living in lala land and not being realistic. Be a man and suck it up, jobs suck. Get skilled and be useful to society.

Nobody here would tell you what degree and course could give you a great chance at good job. Biz faggots are moronic and the one's with decent job or knowledge are depressed about things not in their control.

Fuck these faggots and try to get into a decent college with good return on your investment. Most college degrees will get you a job and from there it's all about how good you are in your field and networking.

"do what you love"

If we all followed that advice, we would masturbate all day and study pornography. We don't

Do what is scarce and highly sought after but in low supply. As you suggested computer security, it security, mobile enterprise security or management, computer programming for mainframe. Accounting information services. Chemical engineers. Computer engineers

Low supply is high salary
>>

>Low supply is high salary
amenability to self-employment is high average salary, but don't tell the undergrads.

I love the look on their faces when they get a degree with an average salary of $300k/year and then find themselves working their asses off to make $50k because the average is thrown by consultants, contractors, managers, and owners in that field.

and then become a mediocre cog in a machine because you picked money as the only motivation for choosing an activity that you'll spend the majority of your adult life doing.

It's not mutually exclusive, sometimes you can enjoy something and get paid. You just need to make sure you network and see what is available within your field of interest.

this

If I did that, I'd be studying Philosophy. Or else Finance.

Instead I'm studying computer engineering and I have a 3.7 GPA. When I finish my degree, I'll still be very much in play for jobs in finance. I'll probably do a masters in CS then try to break into quant finance or maybe software engineering. CompE gives me the math and programming ability needed to succeed in finance jobs today.

The important thing is I have the choice. I could still decide to follow my passion with Philosophy, but I have a very good degree behind me as a back up plan. where I live, education is practically free so I have zero student debt.

My end game is definitely running my own business, starting my own hedge fund is the ultimate dream. I've done an internship with a financial firm in London already. I genuinely believe have the social skill, technical ability and confidence to do whatever I want. I could be working as waiter and I'd still be trying my ass off to get to where I want to be. I'd die happy knowing I was trying towards something more.

And this is why philosophy is the only thing that matters in this world.

>Are economics/finance majors a meme?
Econ is a meme major. Finance is not

>Where is the true money to be found outside /physical sciences and engineering/? I heard cyber security is pretty lucrative now.

Those are the safest bets for decent money, but those usually have ceilings and not much room for pay growth. I'm a PA. I get paid well but I'll probably be stuck with this same salary for a while. My brother works in sales for an aerospace company and he always has the possibility to make more money every year. I used to make more than him. Now he makes more than me. However, if his company goes to shit or the economy crashes, he may be SOL and get laid off. That's why medicine is nice because it's recession proof.

>Also, how important is the university you attend? Do you need to be top 100 to even consider above $60k?
Alma mater doesn't matter at all in order to make above 60K . My brother, some friends, and I are perfect examples of this as we all went to lesser known universities. It truly is about your work experience, grades, work ethic, and/or who you know in the field. I had decent grades and lots of health care experience as a volunteer and a CNA to get into PA school. I think my brother had a shitty 2.8 GPA (as an econ major, too, kek) but one of his old fraternity brothers help him land the sales job.

>economics/finance majors a meme?
yes, yes they are, if you care about the discipline. It's applied mathematics, with complete disregard to most logic and reason.

>do you need to be top 100 to even consider above $60k?

depends on where you at bud. Studying in the Netherlands in Amsterdam, I doubt I'm going to start with 60k, but it's pretty good tbqh.

>Econ is a meme major

Elaborate?

Real money is when you create a business. Not easy, but that's hands-down the best way, IMHO
