I'm tempted to take up programming as a side hobby for the fun of it, but have a career in a finance based field (bach/masters in finance/economics)

I'm curious if there's any way that this can translate into side income. Would that just be a meme "develop apps lmao" or do people actually earn money by coding in their spare time?

Always been fascinated by coding, learned a great deal of C++ and Java through highschool/childhood, but never went down that road for my career.

Thoughts? Experiences as someone who codes while working in a completely different field?

code an app that helps you automate your job.

code an app that you can sell to your employers for reoccurring dividends.

code an app that helps you code an app that lets you code an app

etc.

Not looking into that, question was pretty clearly about coding

learn R or Python + one of the plotting libs (ggplot2, matplotlib, quantmod if you're into trading)

Export from excel into CSV, data <- read.csv(), make awesome visualizations that tell a story about the data

Maybe also learn SQL and relational database theory. Excel is basically a RDBMS for laymen, so many of the same concepts apply (join tables, vlookup is a join, etc.)

If you truly love your hobby, then pursue it for its own sake and the income will follow if it's meant for it.

Don't pursue hobbies for the sake of income because you'll eventually corrupt the very nature of your hobby.

I'm working on a computer game and i'm looking for a programmer. Would you be interested? It will be on kickstarter this year.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
