for new users its almost to impossible to find something of worth.
i can simply give you a directory of "verified" services. meaning they are all rated highly by other users.
being scammed or not its up to you, you need to read the FAQ's and decide for yourself if its legit.

How do I distinguish the legit ones from the scams?

If it's like on the clearnet, then it's a sort of sixth sense that you develop by associating certain characteristics to trustworthy/untrustworthy websites, so after some experience, you know for example which torrent site to download from, etc.
What are the clues that you (consciously or subconsciously) look for when dealing with a website that you're not sure whether to trust or not?

for one. you can distinguish a good site by its construction.
good and trust worthy sites don't just put up random pictures of CC cards they took from google. if it looks shady ask them for proof.
trustworthy sites also have return options. a marketplace is much much safer than a retailer because the owner of the marketplace can confront the seller if he scams you and potentially return your money. good reviews are priceless in a place like this. shopping experiences are even more.
