Thanks man. I'm not wiping any ass though, just saving every penny I can because this job is a hellhole. I'm trying to plan my exit in the next year or so to a private equity firm or something.

Trying to stay somewhat anonymous in my response.

I studied engineering in college and had some knowledge on what I currently do from interning at an engineering company. There was a lot of transferable knowledge but I had to pick up on the finance stuff very quickly.

I cover mergers and acquisitions in my sector and build company-wide financial models, and my engineering background allows me to get more detailed than your normal finance guy.

As far as tips, I don't know man. I consider myself lucky in my situation. Looking back I wish I had taken more finance / economics classes in college, but I really don't know.

>>
>>1663841

>What did you pick up from your engineering position?

I learned a lot about the engineering side of my field and how to take those technical things and have them be reflected in a DCF model.

I don't just look at a company's 10K to build a model - I look at their assets from a technical standpoint and predict, based on public-available information (and private in some cases), how much they are worth and what potential upside is in place today and in the future. The models can be pretty compelling and hold more weight than if a finance guy just reads a balance sheet and plugs in basic (and usually unrealistic or flat out incorrect) assumptions.

Sorry for my vagueness. I'm trying to remain anonymous. Not a lot of people do what I do.

>Also, did you do any kind of post-grad before heading there, or any financial experience?

I worked at my co-op full time for a few months before transferring over to the bank.

I've been hearing that a technical discipline, coupled with finance experience, opens a lot more doors than strictly finance or technical experience. You could look into doing an MBA in the future if you are very interested in finance. You're broad background would be a strong plus IMO.

I've heard it's as boring/exciting as any other mechanical engineering job because you rarely get to see the big picture anyway. Idk, working for NASA or ESA can be great but especially with private companies I think it's less exciting. I hope you'll have fun though.

This is pretty true, but being part of something thay big and the depth of yhe analysis you get to do make it pretty cool. Plus, there's nothing quite like seeing these big planes go through assembly

Sadly, the field's going to shit since there's no demand for new aircraft. For the next several years, the main focus is going to be on manufacturing, and, for most engineers, that's not the fun stuff. Hopefully, things will turn around in a few years.

>Why isn't this the standard.

The lack of combined technical and financial understanding is what leads to bad analysis of companies and bad valuations in my specific field. I see it at my bank and it's caused us to get in shit with clients in the past.

As far as finance tips, understand how cash flows through an income statement and how to model that would probably get you past a technical interview at a bank / financial services company. Finance is simple once you understand all the bullshit jargon that's thrown around and what it means (EBITDA, FCF, FCFE, etc.). This skillset will match well with your technical background and will open more doors for you (far more than taking a bullshit engineering elective you don't care about, like I did).

I've been hearing a lot of talk about fintech and how strong programming skills are being exploited in the finance industry, but I don't know from first hand experience.

oh, I should mention that I did an apprenticeship as an EE before though, and worked in the field throughout uni. I graduated when I was 25.
Now I'm 30, in a lower management position which still needs muh ee knowledge. Making 193k (that's gross salary btw. Don't know bout murrica, but Switzerland lists gross. Since I'm living in a very cheap area in Switzerland tax-wise, I pay around 20k in taxes and 4k for mandatory health insurance.)

On top of this probably gonna do some side (freelance) application design on my own. This job is really only 40 to 50 hours a week, with no weekends, so I can easily get some side work done.

Anyone have any experience in this?

Are you cleared to do so i.e. you signed a non-compete that prevents you doing software work?
>>

EE's need a boss too. Instead of doing engineering yourself all day, you're telling EE's what to do while managing the finances of the projects.
If you want to be a leader, you'll sooner or later always get at least somehow into finance, if not, you're going to have a salary ceiling (which is high as fuck for EE's though, and a good EE can go work anywhere in the world he wants to.)

What's your degree in? I graduated back in 2014 as a mining engineer. Mining has been in the gutter for the last few years so nobody can hire young mining engineers. I've worked as a civil engineer and as a metallurgical engineer since then - neither job was too hard to find. You just need to hustle and be personable.

Was it difficult getting into banking with an engineering degree? I'm a year out from graduating with a Mech E degree, but I'm thinking I'd rather do banking when I graduate. I've had 2 engineering internships and I have another set up for this summer, and from my experiences, it seems like engineers have slow advancement opportunities and are paid averagely.

What's your take?

Bruh, take this from someone who currently works for a private equity firm: unless you're like the most ambitious, smartest, most personal guy ever, you're never making it into VC with a starting salary like that in NYC.

You fill a middle office position at best, possibly at back office support role to the middle office.

I was offered a position for $65k with one of the largest asset managers in the country ($119 billion AUM) and said sorry, not doing middle office. Because why would I put myself behind an 8 ball like that?

Good to hear that both would be good choices. I was thinking about aerospace engineering too but it's probably to specialized. What are you're thoughts on this?
I'm in germany btw
>>
>>1668794
How soon did you decide you wanted to go this route over engineering? Did it take a lot of networking/people skill?
>>
>>1671583
Ach Bernd. Du kannst ja bei der Luftgans etwas machen.
If you're into engineering, go engineering. If you want to climb the career ladder, either open up your own business (you can do that with aerospace engineering too breh, just not build entire planes but plane parts) or ascend to a managing position.
Though instead of studying something specialized, I personally would recommend getting a 'standard' degree like mech engineering, EE, or something similar, in case you change your mind later. You could do them in an uni that specializes in the aerospace field? I don't know any in Germany, but probably there is one.
My uni for example had a medtech major which focused more on the space side than the hospital side.
