In a sticky situation lads lease was up on the first we paid rent to my roommates mom since it's her lease but she moved out and we took over a couple months ago. She was kind of upset we we're not about out yet by the first so she kept the rent and said we can get the deposit instead, if we don't pay rent can the landlord change locks or take all our shit while we are at work?

No, landlord needs to go to the constable office in order to do that and be within the law. If she does change the locks you can sue her because she didn't give you an eviction notice that is recognized in court

Where are you?
In most places in the US it would be illegal. They would first have to give you notice, like one month at least. And then they would have to get the county sheriff's department to actually force an eviction. They can't just change the locks and lock you out. If they do, go to the police.
