it's excel but free, and I have lost my personal finance excel data before, due to reformatting pc after I got a nasty virus (data was not worth much)

After that i started using google docs, works a lot better if you download lots of games, porn, etc.

What you are seeking for is a spreadsheet with macros (code). But this code could also harm your pc. You should not download spreadsheets from the internet if you don't know who makes (and distributes) them.
Better google "Excel Tutorial VBA" and become a power user.

I haven't used Excel much, but it sounds like he could do what he needs using formulas, he shouldn't need VBA

In which case, Google sheets or whatever OpenOffice is called these days should work for him
