In the US you go start selling products or services and then go to your local government and purchase a business license. You may also need to talk to your insurance agent about buying some liability insurance. If you have assets that could be lost in a bankruptcy (most of you don't) then you may want to incorporate as an LLC. Then you keep records of your transactions and do your taxes at the end of the year.

if you want to employ people you also need to get workman's comp insurance on them, and make your quarterly contributions of their withholding taxes and your share of their FICA taxes. This requires first getting an EIN from the IRS.

Don't use LegalZoom. There's plenty of businesses out there that try to fuck over small business owners with legalese and finances. Just get a lawyer to file your business license shit for you, and find an accountant for part time shits. No need to go with big firms that nickle and dime you.

Not OP, but also interested in starting a self employed lawn/pressure cleaning business for my local area. Do I have to purchase a business silence and keep records of my transactions (and do taxes at the end of the year, like other anon said). Any help appreciated!

yes, you have to pay taxes on net profit over a certain amount, consult your local laws.

in the US you'll probably need to buy a local business license. It's bought for the year though, so you can probably get away with making a bit of money and then buying it with that.
