Are you friends with your co-workers? Do you socialize at work or outside of it? Good idea/bad idea? Are you a manager/owner who encourages this and has found it successful?
I know there's an antisocial sampling bias here but I'm wondering your thoughts

Never cross work with your personal life.

I agree. My managers/employer seem dedicated to convincing me otherwise.
I have never had a social outing with my coworkers/supervisors/subordinates, outside of work hours...
I think the biggest mistake of my career was not getting a beer with a senior guy from a different team in the same department...

When you are a mid-low level worker competing with all the other grunts, no, you have no real friends at work.
The rats will inevitably stab you in the back to climb ahead.
Once you move higher up the management chain, it's all about who you make friends with and who your "inner circle" is.

>be me
>come into the office in the morning
>Hey everyone!
>Hey OP!
>get to work and no one talks to anyone for 8 hours straight unless its important
>end of work day
>Cya guys tomorrow!
>Cya man!
It has been like this for the last 3 years

This is a good point. Makes sense. I think because my current employer is a small family-owned business it would be in my interest 2 befriend them because I have potential and I could move up in the next few years. However I might be able to get a higher wage moving out of the city anyway.
