>wondering how many people are able to make their own websites now

Should I continue putting time and effort into getting web design jobs? I've been trying to figure out if the average person knows how to make their own website or not. So far, I've seen that many Millenials know how to make their own, but the age 32+ demographic do not know how.

Some millennials have also told me that they have no idea how to make a website. How many people do you think know how to make their own websites?
>>

i don't know how, im 26.
>>
You need to widen your search for clients
>>
Nope. Wix killed it. You need to specialise. Become a pro @php or security.
>>
>>1642709
Wix is shit though
>>
Did web design for myself for a few years
Did it commercially for 1.5 years

Yes, it's still and always will be profitable
Most people and small businesses are looking for package deals where you offer them hosting, domain, client management etc.
You can also offer ecommerce packages at 300% the markup.

Like always, it's about managing expectation
>>
>>1642713
It is, nur the proper don't know / care
>>
>>1642709
Hilarious, but wrong.

Will some people build their own website? Of course

Will some people use Wix to build their own website? Of course

These people were never, ever your target market.

The targets have always been clueless fucks, people who would rather have a """professional""" do it and people who are too busy/lazy to do it. And there are lots of these people out there, you just need to know how to advertise to them.

Hell, for the clueless fucks, you could whip up something cheap like Wix provides and make a killing on it.

My ex-boss just called me up about her broken DVD drive in her laptop. $200 for 20 minutes of turning screws. Never assume everyone has your skillset or you'll talk yourself out of opportunity.

damn this advice is superior
>>

>>1642764
Boom boom boom so fucking right! I call it "milking". You do for them all they want at a ridiculously high rate. You make I so hey depend on you for everything. Server hosting, design, development. Then you milk until they go bankrupt or until thy want to kill the idea.

+1 respect point, anon

As someone who lives off of website design.. this is the right answer.

I bought a GoDaddy package and couldn't even install fucking WordPress. Kept going through the "auto installer" and it just lagged out at "installing theme" and then gave me some timedout page. Cancelled my shit a few days later. Not sure how y'all do it, seems confusing.

Making tremendous profits is a priority.
I sound harsh but I love my clients. A few of them are just dumb as fuck.

Capitalism in a nutshell
>>
>>1642685

Sounds like you aren't charging enough.

You should be earning at least $50/hr for your services.

But yes, what you do is wizardry for 90% of people. Take advantage of this fact.
>>
>>1642709

Wix and that other one are both shit.

For a person to have a good looking and functional site, they need to hire someone else to build it.
>>
I do web design but have had a few long term clients that I milked to death.

I'm a bit rusty but any suggestions on how to pick up new ones?
>>
>>1642935

This is true, there are 2 things I eventually see hurting the industry in the long term.

1. Wix is currently shit, however down the line I see websites becoming drag and drop, maybe 10-20 years down the line. You would still have professionals but the price you pay would be nominal compared since even designers would be wise to use this as it would take a few minutes/hours to put together a site.

2. Web centralization through sites like Facebook. Facebook is on a war path in wanting to dominate web traffic and unless people get bored and drop it at some point, eventually they will be a one stop shop for e-commerce, business pages, photography, forums, etc.
>>
bump, interesting thread
>>
>>1642911
Get godaddy and host gator. Godaddy for the web name, hostgator for the content storage (scripts, themes) gl anon. educate yourself, it's the only way to stay afloat
>>
>>1642685
>How many people do you think know how to make their own websites?
2% max of an age group.

I work with a lot of people that believe they can build websites. They you visit those sites and see that they are mixing fonts like crazy people, use 2mb files as illustrations and then top it off with switching off indexing in robots.txt.

Any idiot can put something online. They're still idiots though.
>>
>>1642685
I got paid like 15+k to manage a e-commerce platform so yeah there is money to be made.

But your undercharging. Also what your calling 'web design' isnt going to make money. If you want to make money you need to be capable of making web based applications where you can charge 30k for a project.

For example the shitty census website that Australia got IBM to make costed like 500 million or something stupidly retarded.
>>
>>1642685
Man I really missed the boat.
>>
Its more about dealing with clients than doing anything cool. Its the biggest pain in the ass if you are a creative person.
>>
>>1642757
"Never assume everyone has your skillset or you'll talk yourself out of opportunity."

Good advice anon thx
>>
When you say "web design" do you just mean slapping up a word press install?
This would be pretty lucrative if I got people to compensate me even in the slightest to do this. I'm not confident enough and don't have the free time to do real web development (databases, user auth, etc. everything in the standard facebook, twitter, crud app) beyond random hobby shit.
I imagine you need to physically find clients? Anyone who can use fiverr would probably be competent enough to make a site themselves.
>>
>>1647611
Upwork is easy to find clients on. Shitty ones mostly but some are alright.
>>
>>1647611
>>1647770
Stop doing shit like this.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur/comments/5ffp9j/web_design_only_started_in_jan_this_year_making/

The money is definitely still there to be made if you live in the right area, don't go after low payout targets though it's more effort than you guys want to expend for less money.
>>
Can someone here help?

I have a hosting package at 1&1

GF has her domain registered at 1&1

How do I make it so it'll let me host and build (with WP) her site on my hosting package??? Please help boyos, she'll be mad if I don't get it to work because I claimed I could lol.
>>
>>1648661
for 50 bucks, i can tell you
>>
>>1642685
You're overestimating the millenials. The majority of them neither can do anything creative with a computer nor are willing to learn it. Their computer literacy is limited to the ability to create a Facebook account or install a video game.
>>
>>1649118

I'm actually considering spending money on this. Would be more like 25$ for 45 minutes of someones time, because I'm sure there will be a whole series of questions following...
>>
>>1649146
I agree with this
>>
>>1648624
>Stop doing shit like this.
What? I don't even make websites for cash I was just speculating.

Anyway that's interesting he's making that much money with just static pages I wouldn't have thought that's possible. And I absolutely agree with his sentiment that word press looks like shit compared to just making a simple design from scratch.
>>
>>1649376

If I build a site with html and css, can I also add things like lightbox in order to have a neat looking gallery section?
>>
I've done a lot with visual basic and still am clueless about hosting a webpage. Any advice?

>If you look on the cult of copy fb group this guy posted a shout out to the resident "guru" there about how he used their training and this post to gain followers for his new fb group.
Ah so it was all bullshit. I swear 99% of the industry is people trying to circle jerk/con each other.

>>1649393
That probably needs js, but sure no reason you couldn't.

>>1649400
All the hosting companies have in depth tutorials on how to do stuff.
>>
>>1648624
The fuck? What are you talking about?!
>>
>>1648661
Write to one and one support? It'll take a minute and they'll sure be able to help you I guess.
>>
>>1649393
for lightbox all you need is just jquery. all websites are built with html and css. although the argument whether or not they are "real" languages is debatable. but thats brought up by usually fags who are using lisp or something.
>>
>>1649393
yes, but it sounds like you have no idea what youre doing and you will probably suck at it
>>
>>1649422
this type of reddit post is infuriating to an actual talented software developer. if this retard with zero coding knowledge is selling shit templates for big buxxx what am i doing wasting my time in angular and react?
>>
>>1649807
>what am i doing wasting my time in angular and react?
You're not lying on Reddit about how much money you make, in order to shill a FB group with affiliate links like that guy is. That's what you're doing.
>>
>>1649807
yeah, its just some bullshit. but if you want to talk about wasting time, i don't know why you are learning both angular and react lol.
>>
>>1649807
>talented software developer
There is no such thing, development = hard work, have nothing to do with talent.
>>
>>1642685

Your just lucky, I have a few web devs sites, I hardly make any money.. and are old and respected enough.
>>
>>1642709
wix business plan in a year probably costs more than buying domain and hosting on your own for 10 years lol
