At the bare minimum, they hire the GM. Some owners like to meddle in the operations (generally unsuccessfully), but a lot of them just sit back and collect the money or fire the GM if the money isn't coming in.

Hire the managers sometimes. Usually sports teams have boards of directors.

But I thought, for example, the reason Liberty Media bought the Braves was for the broadcast rights? Doesn't seem to make sense to me if it's simply a brand portfolio purchase.
