In the third grade my gifted and talented class were pulled out of school and sent to a building where local reps from Fortune 500 companies explained concepts like widgets, supply & demand curves, horizontal and vertical integration, and various other concepts. In 4th and 5th, we studied why civilizations fail. In 6th & 7th grade I studied basic cryptography, forensic techniques like dusting for fingerprints, and reading witness statements in sets to determine who was lying. In 11th grade I was the state extemporaneous speaking champ. By graduation I had more honors credits from AP exams than most honors college seniors who have completed undergrad. I left with multiple full rides, some of which were worth over $200k over 4 years of tuition at prestigious colleges. Currently I'm running an import/export business while completing a dual major in applied mathematics and physics while writing a fantasy novel that a publisher is already interested in.

Not all of us are really on equal footing OP, but you can't knock people for being interested in advancing themselves.
