Can you afford to have 5% of your pay put into a fund that charges you to lose money?
im 25 and the youngest in my department at work by at least 10 years and Im the only one with a 401k....

Well if you don't have enough money for basic necessities then it is true.
It also depends on the 401k. Sometimes an IRA (either flavor) is better.

hey what about instead i save the money as gold and then use it once i've accumulated enough for a few multifamily units? apartments? just enough for a down payment on a $1,000,000 complex and then ride that till i have enough for another down payment for another? doing this instead of putting that money in a 401k or an index fund, wouldn't this better?
In Australia you get 9.5% in addition to your wage, and it's compulsory.
