Make a demo account with a reputable broker, try it out.
Out of the ones I've tried I'd recommend:
CMC Markets, for the client, ease of trade and lots of products (now even some that amount to binary trading) - if you can get past the fact that the fucking thing is using flash. It holds your hand all the way when it comes to position sizing, and having everything visually easy to set up/gauge.
That's about it, since I haven't looked at others since. I'm a eurofag, so results could vary depending on where you live (nobody wants to deal with american financial regulation, so whatever you get will be a shit version of the actual thing). If you're in the UK/Ireland, it's tax free even, as long as you can pretend to have a "real" job on the side.
If you're in US I'd still try it, but you have easier access to something like futures and options trading - I'd say take a look at Dough and Tastytrade. Less action, but pretty damn safe.
Remember: Only chumps own stock outright for actual trading. Owning stock is for insiders and penny traders. For investing (not trading), you should be dollar-cost-averaging the bulk of your money into a mix of stock market indices, never individual stocks. See Bogleheads and Vanguard.
