I think it should be a unit within a home economics class. Basic carpentry, vehicle maintenance, plumbing repair, cooking etc. should be taught as well.

This raises the question of what the responsibility is of a public school. If the only responsibility is to prepare you for higher education, then shouldn't higher education be subsidized? (I don't believe it should be, by the way) And should a public school teach students certain skills that are applicable to every day life, in addition to the academic career path?
