Computer Science is an abstract academic field while Software Engineering has a more vocational bent.

Top talents at top tier institutions could contribute more to the advancement of human civilisation via the CompSci route, while the majority of others would be better served in their careers by learning Software Engineering.

i'm in networking/cybersec and I love it, but SE is probably going to pay more. Cybersec and working for the government is Odin-tier though, my friend has been in it for 2 years and makes close to the 80k mark.
