Have any of you relocated for work?

I recently accepted a job 2 hours from home and will be moving to the area (Philly). My job starts in about 2 weeks. I don't know the area well and I'm thinking of just getting an Airbnb or a temporary room for a couple of weeks while I look around and find something permanent. Anyone have some advice on relocating?

Lot of landlords are going to demand to see proof of employment, so be prepared to show them paychecks, and the job offer. Not as big of a deal because you're only going ~100 miles, but you still should tell them some details

The more upfront you are, the happier they will be to work with you.

Yeah lol if I can make it through my first year here without being stabbed I will consider it a success.

I've been bringing my offer letter with me as well as my bank statement to show to landlords. I'm up front, just say that I'm starting a new job soon and I have savings, hasn't been an issue so far.

yes, I had to move to another state for my first job. I looked up apartments online, called ahead, let them know I was coming and was interested in moving in same day. had to pay a security deposit and that was it

I have and it sucked

> didn't really like the area
> didn't really like the people, it was a blue collar place
> none of my friends and family there
> the job was mediocre

My advice on moving for work would be to only do it if there are huge advantages, like much more money, and the place you are going is great. But if you have no choice then that's another story.

My only main advice would be to stay in a temp place for a month or two and spend a lot of time getting to know the area. Then rent/buy a place in the good part of town.

Part of the reason my last move did not go well, was that I mistakenly rented an apartment in a bad part of town, and not the nice part. Location is everything. It will dictate who you end up hanging out with.

Yeah, it usually isn't if you've got decent credit and no evictions/judgements against you on a background check. Also, check utility costs, and things like internet availability. Lot of dream locations have expensive utilities, or nonexistent internet.

As for getting to know the area. Eh. Drive around the neighborhood for a day before you sign on a place. Especially in PA. Serious meth/opiate problems in huge parts of PA. All of New England has problems with that shit.

Yeah that's what I'm looking to do. I don't want to sign a year lease on an apartment before knowing what else is out there. I figure it's also going to be a lot less stress if I can find something furnished so I can just bring the basics down and get settled in. I'm having kind of a hard time finding places though. Tried Craigslist, Trulia Airbnb and some other sites but not too much success. Today I went to look at a few places but nothing great. I actually watched a potential housemate do a drug deal, so I guess I can cross that one off the list lol

For a temporary share, try looking near a university and look for houses with grad students. There's usually someone in a house who is studying overseas, so they have a lot of openings. They will be reasonably responsible and grown up. If you are staying for a while, it can be nice to have the built-in network of people to help you figure out the area.
