/biz/ I need advice

I'm currently a full time hourly employee making $21.50. I'm required to go on about 5 business trips per year.

I have been offered a salaried position with an approximate pay of $47,000 to $50,000, but I will be traveling almost every week.

Does the increased travel demand make up for the small pay increase?

>I currently do shipping and logistics for a technology company
>New position is doing mobile hardware support
>>
25$ an hour to travel that much? Fuck that man.
>>
>>1565622
Do you know what the restrictions on travel are? Like, weekends and such? I personally love to travel, but if this meant I was losing my weekends or something... meh. I'd take the advancement opportunity if it was just weekdays.
>>
>>1565622
Do you get per diem pay or any other benefits?
>>
Just depends.

Some people enjoy the travel. It can come with perks like nice hotels, constant free food, expense account, etc. Plus you can engage in the whore and stripclub thing if you're into that.

But most people hate it. I fucking hate it. I don't like sleeping in a hotel bed, I don't like carrying a suitcase, I don't like being away from the people I love, etc...

Jobs that require constant travel should pay at least $60k a year in my opinion.

I'd turn it down if it were me.

Mostly weekdays. There is some international travel that will require some weekends - like leaving the US on a Sunday to go to Australia is an example.
>>
>>1565667
Yeah. I get per diem that changes depending on where I go. So essentially I eat for free when I'm out.
>>

>>1565670
Depends on how much you like to travel bro, but if you're going international it would be a great opportunity to see new places. You could even ask for a 2 day vacation after international trips to see the area a bit. Also consider per diem as an added bonus as I'm sure you won't spend more than you get a day.
>>
>>1565667
This.

You save a ton of money living on the road. Drive rental cars, expensed. Meals expensed or per diem. No utilities used if you have your own place your bills drop.

Downside is you have no life at home or the place you visit unless there's other young ppl in your job with you. If youre flying from West coast to east coast you might lose Sundays too. But having no life can also mean more gym time and more money saved.

I was an IT consultant for 5 years. I recommend it

>I have been offered a salaried position

This is usually a loss in your wages. Sure it looks like a raise but you get cucked by management to work more hours.
Fuck salary. It's designed to cheat you.
>>
>>1565622
Assuming that you're being paid for 40h weeks, 50 weeks/year, you'll be getting about 2 dollars extra per hour, or $4000 for the year. I assume that you get paid overtime regardless of a salaried position or not.
The real question is how much it would impact your personal life and whether you like or dislike travelling.
Is it worth that extra money?

>>1566111
It's a gain, also aren't employers required to pay overtime in those cases?
>>
>>1565622
The salary itself might not me a huge boost, but think about the perks of having your expenses covered. No more paying for food, gas, car insurance, etc. Also can you pay for everything on a personal credit card and keep the points? These things all add up. Also, you can always try and negotiate a little higher salary.
>>
>>1566111
no. go to college retard

>also aren't employers required to pay overtime in those cases?

lolno

>>1566481
I've seen a lot of people get raked over the coals.

I think you should probably take the opportunity OP, so long as it is just weekdays as you say and you're not crossing too many timezones every week.

But slack off. Really slack off. Also, I could imagine just having some down time in libraries could help. I know that makes it sound like you'll be living like a homeless person, but every decent sized city has a decent university library, at least where I'm from. You could put that into your routine, for a little stability. Turn off all your phones, and just open a book with the window open. There's a reason why Schipol has an airport library, after all.

Just my two cents.
>>
>>1565622
If you like travel, take it. Business travel is a chore for most, and being willing to travel is a big plus.

>>1565622
>offered
Negotiate for a higher salary, faggot. AND more vacation days or a higher per diem.

>>1566111
You should consider this in your salary negotiation. If you get time and a half overtime, you could be losing money. Say that your effective hourly wage will be significantly lower for a position with more responsibility (which is true). The fact they offered this to you means they like you.

If you have been working in this job for two years, you should have been looking for another job. Having another offer on the table (especially with a competitor) will make them very generous.

CAVEAT:

If they don't let you fly at least business class, fuck 'em and quit. No civilized white man should be subjected to economy class for work.

>You should consider this in your salary negotiation.
I do end up working a hell of a lot of overtime per pay period. I do need to absolutely need to calculate me effective pay and not the general [dollars/hour*40*52].

>If they don't let you fly at least business class, fuck 'em and quit. No civilized white man should be subjected to economy class for work.

Economy all the way with is company. Even the owner pays out of pocked for upgrades. I guess that we fly so much that our miles are supposed to get us up-graded.

>If they don't let you fly at least business class, fuck 'em and quit. No civilized white man should be subjected to economy class for work.

Very few businesses do this. I make around $120k and travel about every 4th week (i.e., a much better job than OP is talking about), and my company would never consider paying for more than economy.

I do get upgraded to 1st class about 1/3 of the time due to my Delta status though, which is nice.

Some economic recovery, glad I stopped business travel a few years ago. I'm in tech now, and my company wants me planted at my desk. Some advice:

>negotiate your salary
just do it, extensively research it before coming up with a number

>get on flyertalk forums
These fuckers have a wealth of knowledge on how to maximize the benefits of business travel (points programs) and minimize the pain. Things like tsa preCheck, how to pack efficiently, getting the apps to make travel easier. What to do when things go wrong. Arm yourself with knowledge. Treat it like a mmo and min/max it.

>minimize your home town footprint
If you are traveling that much, just live with family or get a tiny studio. Buy food that keeps well in the freezer. Best get a room mate you trust so that mail doesn't pile up and the pipes don't freeze.

>stay physically healthy
Try avoiding eating bad food on the road. Work out at the hotel, or at least do body weight fitness in your hotel room.

>stay mentally healthy
If you are traveling alone, loneliness will become an issue, especially if your not in a position where you fraternize with vendors or clients. Avoid getting escorts as they are not worth the price. Just use your airline miles to go to a sex tourism destination.

>use the downtime to better yourself
When I was traveling for work 25 weeks a year, used my CS degree education (which I wasn't using at work) and worked on projects to get job I didn't hate. There will be many hours where you are just waiting in your hotel room. Use it productively.
>>
>>1569482
All great points. I only minimally considered the living expense issue, but I'm seeing now that it is much larger of a problem. I live in Denver, and currently spend 1/2 of my take home pay on a 900 ft^2 studio. How silly to keep this up and spend 10 night a month there.
>>
>>1569482
This is solid advice.

this. anyone that says salary is better is a true cuck
