Why shouldn't you place a ridiculously high bid amount at the last second? It doesn't matter if you can't afford it. Because of the ebay proxy system You'll only ever pay the minimum amount necessary to win. Is there something i'm not getting? Why isn't everyone doing this?

Because when two people do that on the same item they quickly learn it's a stupid idea, someones becomes a non paying bidder and the seller refuses to sell to either of you.
