20 million people enrolled in college this year. So that's a huge chunk of people who are unemployed being counted.
Additionally there is something like 10 million kids in highschool over the age of 16 being counted.

Obviously some of these kids work but I'd say on the book jobs being held through high school and college is not the norm so maybe about 10% of those people listed above have jobs.

Also a decent percentage of the adult population is working some kind of off the book jobs, I'm 20 and still live at home and am technically unemployed but I still work off the books as a waiter.

I'd say unemployment is more likely under 20%.

It's actually closer to 1/2. Real unemployment (which is "non-participation" combined with the official "unemployment" statistic) hasn't been this high since we started recording data, and in all likelihood hasn't been this high since the great depression.

We're going to see some major problems within the next decade. Start saving and investing to build your castle of wealth now, because I can tell you the rich are not going to get the short end of the stick when shit hits the fan.

Most of it came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, some from the Census, and some (particularly the "working age adults") came from the Federal Reserve Economic Data (https://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2) website. I'd have to dig through all my old spreadsheets to get the exact links I used... not at home now, but those resources are a good place to start.

For some reason financial aid became the new welfare, I got 10k loan in a finance degree and made more money day trading that then actually getting the shit job I'd probably have gotten. You can use it entirely for living expenses and if you want could take a year off with it. Nobody ever calls you because you just take a deferal, or go on IBR. That is what I suggest for people who want to be NEET, make a nest egg with anything you can save and then live on it as long as possible but of course you will need to work at some point.

Just get on IBR though, in 25 years of that they just wave the debt.

Part time workers are counted as employed. So really, the number of full-time employed adults is probably closer to, eh, under 40% of the working age population.
