China is buying because of the possible resurgence of the automotive industry and their current on-shoring efforts.
Buying land in detroit is a bad idea though for an individual because of all of the income tax and property tax requirements.
The biggest problem with buying in Detroit is that you have to live in your property. You can't just sit on them and wait

Michigan had been losing people and jobs for a long time. So there's no rental base.
But the Chinese don't care about renting things out, they just do a pure appreciation play with all their stuff. Stupid, really.
But it would be a fun project to do, I've always wanted to tackle a bigger reno than just the cosmetic stuff that I've been doing
