Anyone here ever try metal detecting? I was thinking of buying one for a couple hundred and giving it a shot. I live on the coast so I figure there has to be coins/jewelry/buried pirate treasure on the beach. Now I don't think I would make my money back anytime soon, but I figure it would keep me active on the weekends.

you can pretty easily pay for your detector.
you'll never pay for your time or your gas.
it's more of a hobby than a /biz/
I guess you could get a job finding buried pipelines and cables though.

You can just use divining rods for that though

I found so much gold it'd make you puke.

i tried it at a beach once. Didn't really find much except some bottle caps.
Found a gold necklace once. The hardest part was getting it off without waking her up.
Most likely gonna dig up old trash and scrap metal. It is fun though

I'm english. For every roman/viking/norman stash found, there's a LOT of stories of people finding unexploded WW2 bombs.
It is literally a life-threatening hobby. Every find you make could be riches, or it could be an explosion waiting to happen. Or just as likely be an old pipe, a piece of decades-lost farming equipment, or an actively in-use pipe or cable.
Around where I live, it's most likely going to be a bomb. Or you'll be run over by a tractor or combine.
