Design and development costs and marketing. A new site can't compete with the already existing ones that are pouring tens of thousands into marketing already. There are limited ways to market in this space and preexisting sites drove up all the costs.
Now not even 20 grand is enough. A guy I know put in 20 of his own + 20 from partners and it failed.
