Hey guys, I've recently gotten my MD and plan on specializing in Allergy/Immunology. The median salary varies but typically land around 180k. Its a good salary for a single man but I'm married and the wife and I plan on having a couple of kids soon.
So with 180k per year, how does that bode with a family of 4? I'm in the SoCal area but possibly considering moving to NorCal or even elsewhere across the state.

I raised 2 kids on $30k, you should be fine.
your housing costs a lot more than mine does, but other than that prices where I live are similar to yours.

People raise families with far less. If an MD can't manage a family of 4 what fucking hope does everyone else have?
You're an idiot. Either specify exactly what you consider to entail raising your kids such as private schools and a million dollar house or get out. This is not an ego boosting session.

ignore these poorfags. You cannot afford a house for 4 people in SoCal on only $180K. Is your wife mentally disabled or something? In what century do women stop working to shit out kids? I didn't think it was this one

Move faggot.
You could live like a king off 180k in the Midwest. Instead you'll live like a fucking pauper in commiefornia.
Actually just stay in Cali you commie scum.

Why would you want 4 kids you Idiot? Dont you know there are more than enough people in the world already? Have 1-2; you can give them a higher standard of living, you don't ruin your wife's body as much, and youll have more spending money for yourself.
If advise you to move out of CA as well. And never go to NorCal, you won't even be able to afford a house there anymore.
I abandoned ship earlier this year because of all the bs and am thankful for being able to leave

I'm glad you guys understand how expensive Cali can be. On a real note, where do you suggest I move? We considered the east coast too. The midwest and south isn't our cup of tea but it's always and option.

I don't want her to work. I'd prefer her to have a comfortable living with me and the kids we have. I'm just lucky that my work hours are similar to normal people's 9-5. Some doctors have a fucking HORRIBLE schedule.

If you're not white I suggest you go back to whatever fucking country you came from

$180k seems low... my wife's dad is a PA and he takes home over $200k and that's just working at a clinic with admittedly a decent amount of overtime
He weighed up going back to 'upgrade' to a full Dr but always said the math didn't add up - cost of college for those 2 years wouldn't lead to any benefit as he'll retire in 5-10 years anyway
The Dr's at his clinic apparently take home over $300k
This is mid-west (Illinois)

You make more starting off as a specialist but from ehat ive seen (nurse) the most well to do besides like plastic surgeon / neurosurgeon are hospitalists who outsource to nurse practitioners
You take on patients loads at skilled nursing facilities - you oversea the np's (this only works in states where np's have actual priveleges)
So you keep your day job and just show up at each facility once a week to check in , you charge the facilities xyz and then pay the bp's zy , keeping z for yourself
They do the work. Your name is on some business cards. You make the money

I work for a large physical practice and you're right as far as GPs go.
Specialists almost always make much more than general practitioners, though.
Kek enjoy severe poverty and welfare on that salary my man

>in the Midwest
Who the fuck wants to live there?

And inore these dumbasses , you can quantify the cost of babysitting or a fill time nanny for 4 kids and im sure its more than your wife would make
/biz/ fucks 2 things up everytime , real estate and understanding that not everyone is a fst aingle guy in his moms basement
If your set on that specialty id say move , the weather is nice in cali but not lose 120k a year (not to even mention buying power) nice
Come to Sonoma County, we seem to have a lot of allergens. And you can definitely afford a decent house here.
