A book keeper or accounts clerk and similar roles are typically done by people with no college or university education - it will instead be done by trained people or people with certificates, essentially unqualified. It is not a "profession" in the proper sense and has never been a high paying or great opportunity role. It is the kind of work students will do part time if they study accounting, and is generally just various forms of basic data entry. However because they deal with accounts many call them accountants and often they will call themselves accountants despite this not being so.

Accounting itself, especially at the CA or CPA level, is more about assurance, advisory, law, complex financial analysis and problem solving. A lot of accountants that are qualified and experienced will go into other roles such as sales, banking, trading, analysis, risk and sometimes more obscure roles, so the accounting profession is fairly far flung from the book keeping roles which occur at the bottom. Most non-audit accountants might never prepare financial statements in their career, and most non-tax accountants are probably never going to prepare a tax return that isn't for themselves. It's a very broad field and those in anlytical and asvisory roles are unlikely to be autmated in our lifetime.

Its a rather simplistic and highly optimistic explanation. Although it is likely that the entire role will not be automated in our lifetime, more and more of the tasks in the realm of the accountant are being made easier thanks to technology therefore requiring fewer people to do the same job. This is where the danger is.
