The retail giant -- which employs about 2.3 million workers worldwide -- said in a statement that the cuts affect accounting and invoice jobs in its U.S. stores.
The company said affected employees will have the option to work in another role at Walmart.
Communications director Deisha Barnett said the company is "anticipating that associates move into new roles" rather than leave the company.
Walmart said some people may have the opportunity to transition into higher paying roles -- like assistant store managers -- while other roles may pay less than their current salaries.
Walmart says all 7,000 workers will be "transitioned" before the end of the year.
Barnett said the positions are being cut because Walmart is implementing a modernized system for bookkeeping and tracking inventory. New roles have opened up thanks to the pick up service Walmart launched last year, and CEO Douglas McMillion's focus on bettering customer service by putting more employees on the floor of its stores.
My friend worked for the home office and accounting. When I knew him he was retraining to go into engineering because he knew accounting was not only boring as fuck but fucked.

Good. What walmart really needs to do is put self service kiosks in all 40 checkout lanes so they can get rid of all the rude ass cashiers. Fuck walmart right in the ass.

niggers and mexicans are afraid of technology so they use cashiers.
self checkout is easy and fast.

Stupid whitetrash fat whore used a machine that doesn't accept cash.

>another role
>manager: dont worry Bob, you can have a new position!
>Bob: thank GOD! i have 4 children to feed!
>manager: not to worry! here take these gloves, your the new shelve stocker, with a 65% paycut. Wouldnt want to pay a stupid stock shelver accountant wages would we? hahahaha
They won't fire them.
They'll "transition" the desk jokey by moving them to regular unskilled jobs. Might even given them a new title and let them keep the same pay. But they'll be doing all the same shit the high school dropouts do. Stocking shelves, manning the register, etc. The goal of this is so that the employee will voluntarily quit and seek another skilled job somewhere else.
Wal-Mart won't have to pay unemployment for voluntary quitters. This isn't necessarily a bad thing for the worker either, since they'll still be bringing a paycheck in while they look for a new job.

>letting them keep the same pay
do we both know the same cutthroat shithole that pays their people the bare minimum required?

Warned you that accounting was a meme major
Book keeping does not equal Accounting.
Most other companies did this a decade ago.

This is called a "constructive dismissal"
It's illegal here in Australia, but near impossible to prove.
Basically means they're all fucked.

These guys are paying their accountants peanuts.
>Walmart said some people may have the opportunity to transition into higher paying roles -- like assistant store managers -- while other roles may pay less than their current salaries.
>ASM at Walmart starts at $27k and averages $35k.
>MFW learning that Walmart's accountants make less than $35k a year

Shit I still got time to change give me a good STEM degree
>>1478503
Were you really surprised Walmart decided to cluck more of its employees?
>>1480582
Get out while you can. Accountant degrees are for working at the IRS, and I assume going to /biz/ gets you on a list that doesn't let you get a tax related job.

I knew office workers would be automated before the line-working grunts. Numbers on a spreadsheet are easier to move than heavy objects, and don't require a robot.

That, and a completely honest family with kids running around being corralled by one parent while the other scans an ENTIRE TROLLEY full of shit, bags it, and puts it back in the trolley, taking up half the space.
It's easier to use a cashier for anything more than an armful of stuff. Especially when they;re trained to be Nice and Helpful, and to recognise when a customer wants them to shut the fuck up.
