I want to buy a bunch of Zcash when it launches.
Should I buy on release day, and run the risk of paying a premium because everybody is buying, or do I wait a month until it settles?
Looking at Monero it would definitely have been better to buy a couple weeks after release, but I don't know if Zcash will settle as low since people will expect it to be eventually adopted by darknet markets..

It's like Monero, but better privacy wise.
People tend to be pretty critical of it though since it wasn't developed in exchange for hot pockets

Definitely wait on it then.
Monero is going to be the new go to altcoin. Why would people suddenly drop it an move to Zcash? There would need to be some sort of event that pushed people away from Monero.
I'm thinking those hyped about Zcash will buy it when it first comes out, but a few weeks after the price will have decreased, and it will sit there until something happens.
But what the fuck do I know?

Monero is a shitcoin and its going nowhere. Its a stupid bubble caused by silly rumours.
Next week it will be back to $2 once the bagholders figure out how to dump their bags
