What are the best indicators for a stock's likelihood of success? I tend to look at historic EPS since I buy and hold, but what are some others?

Three things in addition to anything anon says in reply:
Price Earnings/ Growth (PEG)
A positive statement of cash flows
The management: Look for statements, their rules/guidelines, their conferences, their performance, where they came from, do they get political? Do they get religious? Do they sound intelligent? Do they sound competent?
If Carly Fiorina took over Apple, how quickly would you sell?
You can have a golden goose run by a schmuck, so it is worth nothing.

EPS growth is by far the most important according to Bill o'Neil and guys like Minervini.
Once you've identified a strong group, the stock with the highest PE ratio is the markets favourite so you should go for that one.
Technical analisys is also your friend. First stage sound, tight basis where the relative strength line (that is the line that compares each specific stock with the general market) is reaching new highs.
There really isn't much more to it desu.

Oh and you also want EPS growth to be supported by sales growth - not some accounting trickery.
I like fundamentals mostly. CEO, management team and managable debt are usually what I look for
Ceo is huge for me, it can really make a company

I like safe stocks so I look at high EBITDA/EV and ROIC. High former tells me I'm not overpaying for a stock. High latter tells me if the company has competitive advantage compared to its peers in a sector. Companies with massive competitive advantages are very large and established companies like Lockheed Martin and Pepsico. They also give out consistent dividends. I usually use the ulcer index to filter out some more.
Have you looked into URRE?
