coffee shops are less of a risk than restaurants because they need less investment as less equipment is needed. you can have less staff, so labor costs are lower. coffee has a good margin and you can choose the food items based on margin too. a lot of the food items can be bought in from suppliers and that is acceptable practice, rather than making things from scratch in store. although scratch making is a good point of differentiation.
low revenue per customer, but potentially hundreds of customers a day, plus you can do a lot of business in a small sq. footage.
having worked in hospitality for years, the only business i would go back into hospitality for or invest in would be a coffee shop/cafe. less complicated than a bar, license wise, much less stressful and riskier than a restaurant.
choose a coffee shop you go to often, an independant one if you can. get their menu, get prices from suppliers, get the commercial rates for your area and cost it out. costings shouldn't take long, you can find excels online to help you.
