Has anyone noticed the drastic and rapid drop in prices of television sets at Wal-Mart? Any insight why? Is there some new product/tech coming out that's going to obsolete the current kind?

Dude, they only just stopped producing actual new VCR's this past month

the first run of manufacturing a product is the most expensive as new tools and methods have to be invented. Following production runs are cheaper as the tools and methods are paid for.
after that production gets cheaper as it's spread to other locations and parts are outsourced. Next production becomes dirt cheap when the subs that you outsourced to steal your tools and technology and start producing in competition with you. Finally the bottom drops out of the market when lax Chinese intellectual property laws mean anyone with a couple dollars and a factory can start cranking out your product using your own suppliers and slap their name on it.
All of this means electronics, like any Chinese product, get cheaper over time.
when you see a brand name that's not dropping in price- cell phones are a good example- it's not because the product isn't getting cheaper to manufacture, it's because the brand holder is raping your ass.
Ah I see. So basically 'Black Friday/Thursday' whatever this year we'll be seeing absurdly cheap televisions? Would that extend to computer monitors as well?

just because things get cheaper to manufacture doesn't necessarily mean they'll be cheaper for you to buy. That's up to Walmart to decide.

Well like I stated in OP, prices have been dropping dramatically the last few months.
