Why would you hold VOO or SPY long term compared to a 3x etf like TQQQ or SPXL that would make you a lot more money?
Pic related for example you wouldve made 700% holding TQQQ for 5 years compared to 86% holding VOO. Is there some kind of catch im missing here?

Yep.

Which is?
It's a leveraged ETF. Notice how TQQQ has deeper valleys/drawdown. Leveraged ETFs magnify gains AND losses. Leveraged ETFs are great for bull markets but you. If the stock index only makes small gains in a bear market with a lot of losses in between like right now, the daily losses can overwhelm the small gains. Notice how TQQQ barely makes it pass the peak in 2015 but the VOO makes new highs with flying colors.
Basically, leveraged ETFs are great if you bet correctly in a bull market, but you will be very fucked if you started buying the TQQQ at the beginning of the 2015 bear market.
I don't know anyone who holds leveraged ETFs long-term. They're hot potatoes, kid.
Read the Finra warning on them.
