I'm sulky about my dad not going through with a "buy this cheap 75ft sailboat and pretend to be pirates for the next year" thing just because of some hull rot.

You can get old sailboats for shit cheap. People abandon them in marinas and then the marina sells them for nothing to clear up the space.
