It's not a hard test, it's only hard in that you have to learn the test. I spent about a week doing nothing but just practicing a whole test a day - that seems to be the best strategy.

If it's anything like other equivalent exams (e.g. the LSAT), you'll only get benefit. If you fuck it up, IIRC, the policy is that your highest score counts. If you do better, bam, marginally better chance of getting into a good school. And your chance of doing well is substantial, particularly because the first time jitters will be gone.

I considered doing so because I literally only spent a week studying but maxed out the scholarship opportunities at the place I'm going to (part time MBA programs are a different/weird animal), so I didn't bother doing it again. If you plan to go full time, you'd be a fool not to, as the scholarship opportunities are broader and better schools (e.g. Wharton, HBS) are likely still available to you. Just practice like mad two hours a day or more.

if i score high on the gmat but have an undergrad from a pretty lesser unkown university can i still get into a good masters ?

It's a stretch, but possible. You may need some luck on your side. 760 is all you really need for people to be really impressed.

From what I understand, the marginal returns for studying over 100 hours are virtually nothing. Once you understand the test and the concepts, it's basically an IQ test. I've known people who've dropped thousands of dollars on prep courses and hundreds of hours studying and gotten "increases" that are more than likely statistical noise, but I wouldn't tell someone that after they've put in the time because it'd be dickish. You may just want to put your time into other areas of your MBA application because your resources would be better served working on your essays and improving your resume by doing worthwhile shit.

There are a few people that manage to earn a perfect score on ACT/SAT exams. What's the rate of people earning 800s on the GMAT?

Got a 700. Use Magoosh. 99 bucks and he tells you everything you need to know. Hundreds of practice questions and videos.
