Long story short, 'free' trade happened; America--especially factory towns--got fucked supremely. In some cities like Detroit, corruption also played a factor and city management ignored the decline for too long and didn't try to adapt. The southeast is doing alright because they've been able to retain and grow a fair number of manufacturing plants while keeping the cost of living low and having agriculture as a backstop.

Yea, MPLS/St. Paul do well due to sheer number of fortune 500's there. Per capita they are 3rd behind DC and CT. This is despite their best efforts to drive companies out due to an inhospitable tax climate. I can already think of a handful that have left.

I don't understand what you mean about the MidWest sucking balls because I've lived here (Chicago) my whole life and majority of white people are living prosperously. The entire economy being based on manufacturing and farming has alot to do with it now being a shit hole. Also the shit weather makes no one want to live here so real estate market is shit. I think it will eventually bounce back though

From experience minnisota is a big culprit and that's due to the fact that's it's a heavily socialist state with lots of programs and socialist run things that along with taxes that's appropriate for big places like Minneapolis the surrounding smaller towns eve mimic state goes stale
