I interned at a medium sized finance/accounting firm in my first year of study. I asked for a job there after I got very positive feedback from them and went way beyond what was expected of me. They got back to me with an offer.
My ego is a little inflated from this because I am the first of my friends to get an internship let alone a part time job in my industry of choice.
My question: is first year experience (internships and part time work that will hopefully continue in the years to come) going to set me up for the top tier finance like IB, trading for an IB, hedge funds etc or am I not really at that great of an advantage?

was it in IB? was it in a HF? IB looks for internships in IB, HF looks for internships in HF. so if it was more of an accounting firm, it surely doesn't hurt your resume. but not as much as you'd think.
try to use that experience to get an internship next summer in a field that you're actually aiming for.

This. My firm doesn't give a flying fuck where you interned unless it was here or one of the other big guys.

You don't want to do that. You're better off in the small - mid tier firms

You have an advantage because you will be able to start making connections and getting experience early. Great job. However, it really only matters once you have 3-5 years of experience under your belt. Then you can start looking at associate or senior-level positions.

lol That would be funny to be senior at a firm upon graduation
Yeah this makes sense. Everyone there either came from a big 4 or a bank so i think you're right about the networking thing.
