This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Does anyone know where the argument for a $15 an hour minimum living wage in the US even comes from? It's everywhere, of course, but I can't actually find any studies or even casual calculations that come close to supporting that number.
The closest I've found to anything reputable is http://livingwage.mit.edu/, which lists California and New York at right around $13/hr for a single adult.

yeah, like food

The thing is, that's a completely reasonable position if your current wages are literally less than what you would need to cover basic living expenses, but I can't find any evidence that you need $15/hr to do that, which is what the Tumblrinas are claiming.

It's just socialist group think brought into real life.
It's like their version of meme magic.

No it's not. You should only be entitled to what you negotiated with your employer.

Honestly, it's because it looks good in a bumper sticker.

A better number would be $21 to keep up with productivity numbers.

It doesn't work like that unless you have unions negotiating for you (eg. Sweden and Norway). Otherwise employers are going to pay as little as they can get away with and you end up with 90% of the population living in squalor like in China and the Middle East.

>$43,000+/yr per employee
Say goodbye to every family owned store in the country, and hello to corporate fat cats raising costs of living to make up the loss without denting their own bank accounts.

We don't need to raise minimum wage, if you want your wage increased then do it as an individual, don't try to do it collectively for everyone, that will ruin the economy. All this time people spent bitching and complaining about not making enough money, they could have found a better job that pays more. I want my wage raised, but not for everyone else, that's stupid. Communism and socialism is where you do things collectively, and capitalism is where you do it as an individual. Want a better raise, then negotiate with your employers not the government.

You also are not suppose to buy food when you're poor, you go to the foodbank even when you can afford groceries, you do that everyday until you're at least middleclass. Grocery stores usually give all their expired food to foodbanks so don't feel guilty.
