So I'm getting recruited by a competitor of my current company where I make $70k. They really want me as my skills are directly applicable to their projects. I would have to move across country. Average good pay for my skills/exp is like upper 70s at that company (cost of living difference negligible). How high of a number do you think I can request? I think I can make a good case for at least high 80s, but considering the circumstances of them approaching me I wonder if I may be able to hit six figgys , but I dont want to scare them away.

I would be surprised they are scared away by your initial request. They will likey come back with a lower offer, and you will have one more opportunity for a sum higher than theirs but lower than your initial ask.
