Is virtual reality a meme?

Do you see a future huge business opportunity as more adn more people start embracing it?

Sex industry will bank
>>
Not with the current gen

The expensive headsets with nothing but hallway simulator games will only be a niche market

VR will eventually be something magical, but it's not happening with the Rift or Vive

Also people don't like being tethered to a desktop PC which is required with the current gen. You can't even relax on your living room couch or bed with it.
>>
>>1330995
Have you ever experienced VR porn? seems like an interesting concept.

>>1331006
>>1331023

That's what im thinking. It's one thing to be able to look around in a game, which is still really cool, but at the end of the day you're just sitting in a chair with a controller.
>>
>>1331006
Kind of this.

But it still might pay to get in it now, since with a few years it WILL be better.

That being said... The right experience, even with current shitty resolutions, IS pretty damn cool.

>>1331117
Think VR porn in particular requires much higher quality displays. The things that will work on current gen are stylised/cartoon graphics.
>>
>>1330955
As soon as you can get decent VR porn it will take the fuck off.

Give it a decade or so.
>>
I tried a current gen samsung model at a best buy a while ago. It was showing a replay of a basketball game and it was very immersive like you were sitting in the bleachers.

I believe in 3-5 years that there will be hundreds of a entry level and premium headsets on the market due to TV/Netflix watching alone.
>>
Fuck VR.
Look up augmented reality.
That's where it's at, because you can still walk around and see shit, so make commutes fun and / or educational.
>>
>>1331204
imagine if they sell "virtual" courtside seats to basketball games. can do this for all sorts of things even watching a brand new movie at the theatre "virtually"

>>1331234
That's really cool. if they can make a pair of stylish sunglasses that have these capabilities then I think it would be huge. Or even in a contact lense lol but that will take much MUCH longer.
>>
>>1331257
Google is fucking around with this and their Google Glass.
>>
>>1330995
Yes it will, it already has started

>>1331117
>>1331188

VR porn is already here if you use the samsung gear VR with a samsung galaxy s6 or better phone.

To put it bluntly... it's the most significant advance in the industry since the invention of the VCR.

Until you see it, you won't believe it.
>>
porn games-> even more porn addictions-> vr porn rehab centers.
>>
It will be huge. Sick of fucking your fat ugly wife? Slap on the VR goggles and now youre fucking some hot celeb/ pornstar.

Or... Rent the cheapest whore you can find. Throw on the goggles and go to town on whatever anime character your pathetic ass obsesses over.

Women are going to fucking hate this since it makes them fuck holes you dont even have to look at anymore.

Engineering undergrad here, did research on VR meme machines. They're a waste of money investment wise rn except for what >>1330995
said.

Avoid them like the plague until at least a huge breakthrough develops.

VR is gonna be massive. Gonna be.

Big companies are already wrapping their tendrils around it. Hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts already have the tech in their houses. It's not a question of if, but when.

It's not ready for the average family yet- but in five years, everyone will want or have one when people can actually afford it. Augmented reality is gonna be more successful in the short term, though. VR is gonna be big, but I think AR is gonna be the Next Big Thing, just by virtue of its more practical nature.

Of course, porn is going to be a massive selling point for this stuff (like it has for every other new medium in existence), but I can see a lot of other applications. Social ones, mainly. Imagine having a business meeting in VR. Or hanging out with your friends across the country, having a lan party/watching a movie/just hanging out in the same room. Or VR Second Life. People significantly underestimate the effect of presence. I've put my GearVR on people's heads just to show them a 360 photo and it's blown their fucking minds.

I mean, most of this stuff already exists. I've gone into AltspaceVR and it's really something else.

One thing that worries me, though, is saturation. So many of these companies are working on their own HMDs, their own walled gardens, that VR as a medium will become subdivided into a lot of closed systems, which have battles over exclusivity. I hope HMDs end up like monitors, not consoles.

studies show that even blind men prefer women with optimal hip/waist ratio (through feeling alone)
>>
The Samsung VR is cool for about 15 minutes when you initially try but then you realize you would never use it regularly
>>
VR will be huge, we're still in the early days of VR with the rift/vive meme goggles.

Wait for Apple, Microsoft and Google to jump on the VR train.
>>
>>1330955
Are you retarded? Of course its not a meme - its going to be bigger than cell phones
>>
>>1330955
I WANT FULLY IMMERSIVE VR. Until I can touch and smell and hear things like it's the real world I'm not very interested. Too bad I'll be waiting centuries.
>>
>>1332117
But how to profit off of it?
Also I like how you wrote about VR, basically the same way I see it

*looks at rift sitting on desk*
>>
>>1330955

invest in amd they are making chips for vr

Start a livestreaming service that gets pro-quality 360 cameras in live event spaces, then sell streaming access to it for events.

That's my main one.

We are gonna need it to escape the hell that is reality

someone just said in another thread that multiplayervr.com is up for auction on flippa.com and only at 20 bucks. that is an opportunity in the field too even for just the domain name.
>>
>>1334646
The challenge here is needing oodles of content. Graphical designers and/or film professionals, also possibly original score composers. VR seems like it will be "AAA or GTFO".

Anyone disagree?

>people think that they're going to be using a controller for future VR

for premium content you can interact with in cool net ways, maybe but you can play regular steam games in 3d 360 virtual reality with just a 90 dollar headset, your smart phone, a pc and a couple programs like (google cardboard enabler, tridef 3d and trinusVR)

it kinda converts the real game into playable immersive VR then stereoscopically streams it to your phone to use like a gear vr type setup but with any phone.
>>
>>1336107
new ways not net ways
>>
>>1336097
looks really cool but is it practical for home use? home much do you think it will cost? im sure there is a hardcore gamer market that would but it

Absolutely not and way too much/probably not for sale (arcade/net cafes only, maybe?).

Plus it looks completely absurd to use. Personally I think it MIGHT be cool try but it wouldn't be for the game they're demoing, especially not in the early state it's in. As for the market for this, I'm leaning towards the arcade idea. I can't see this in any home, especially not tiny Japanese ones, and so far this is the only game that seems to have full compatibility with it so there isn't exactly a library to chose from. So in an arcade environment, I can see this thing making money, yeah. Otherwise, I'd be amazed.
