Depends on where you live, how many people in the house, the quality of the house. I wouldn't expect the cost for an 8,000sf house would be 4x that of a 2,000sf house. Prob between 2-3x.

In Texas, your property taxes would be 3% of appraised value annually (divided by 12 for monthly ass fucking).

"appraised value" and "actual value" are not necessarily the same.

My "appraised value" here in PA is around $190k for a $600k house. It's still a sizable chunk of change but my tax bill is easily half what it would be in Northern NJ (Metro NYC).

Moral of the story: unless you have a huge level of permanent cashflow, keep your housing requirements reasonable.

One day your kids will age out of the house and you and your spouse are stuck with the maintenance and upkeep of this huge palace. And your kids will get pissed when you down-size because they want to bring their kids to the home they grew up in. (I'm dealing with this exact thing now)
