There are a ton of factors. Its not impossible to make a living playing poker but its not as linear a path as you might think. Professional players excel in different areas. Some might be good at math and probability, others might be good at reading people and picking up tells and others might win just by being ultra agressive and ballsy. Most have combinations of traits and skills that allow them to have an edge, which is all you really need to win. You may sit down at a house game and clean house but then go to the Bicycle Club poker room in LA and get mopped up by rounders that practically live there. The trick is to determine your skill level and play games where you arent going to consistently be outplayed. Remember, if you cant spot the fish at the table, its probably you.

The only real way to tell if you have what it takes is to eat, sleep, poker. Some people just dont have what it takes even with years of practice. Its not just about learning pot odds, positioning, bet sizes, table image, opponent play style and card ranges. Those can be picked up by studying the game. There are some things that cant be taught in books like how well you play under pressure, the ability to keep concentration for long periods of time, intuition, extreme patience, and controlling your body language and facial expressions. Either you have it or you dont. You wont know unless you give it a shot.

Are you 1 in 100?

You'll need to be that 1% if you wanna make it.

If you can make money playing poker, you can make more money doing something else.

Making a living from poker is like trying to be a day trader, there's millions of others grinding and building a bankroll, what makes you think you'll perform better than they do?

People who make the transition to making a living from poker are people who already make consistent profit and have years of experience, study with poker theory, with a great grasp of mathematics.

At a poker table you can see the guys who do it for a living, how? You can tell by how they look. Tired and burnt out with horrible mental issues from the constant stress of trying to make enough to sustain themselves. 99% burn out, some of them ending up in debt with only a big CV gap to show for it and no education or career to go back to. Are you really going to be playing poker for 40 years?

Most of that 1% that do make a living for themselves only live the lifestyle they would if they took a regular dead-end job, with less security. Then you have the .1% that make a brand out of themselves and make their living writing poker books and getting sponsored to suck you into the false dream. Gambling, uncontrollable variance, should not be the basis of any living, surely that should already be common sense.

Poker can be fun, but only gamble with money you can afford to lose in your spare time. Only consider taking it further than that when you're making consistent profit.

all you guys are full of shit. 99% of players loose money. that shit is overrated and overplayed since 2005 at least.

the only way to make money is hosting or buying a pro a buy-in to share is winnings.

You can do it, but it takes a ton of hard work and a poker player doesn't just win money, it's a lifetime calculation of total money gained/lost.

Before you even consider trying to make a living playing poker you need to play 10,000 hands. Without that you have no idea if you're good or not, just if you're lucky.

And you have to meticulously track all of your plays, your BB ratios, your Win/Loss ratio, your total gains percentage.

Seriously, those people considered the BEST in the world only have a win ratio of like +4%. even +1% is enough to make a profit.

But to get there, you have to be willing to lose a lot too. You could be up 100k one month and down 200k the next, you have to be in it for the long game.

You can certainly make a living from poker with common sense and tight play. Getting rich is going to take a balls out leap combined with a hell of a lot of dedication, study, experience, and a bit of luck if you don't have the knack for nosebleed play.
