I'm not American, so this might not apply to you.

But going to law school is one of my big regrets. The field is ridiculously competitive and full of vain extroverted sociopaths who are willing to sacrifice much more than any sane person to make it to the top.

Also the actual work is awful. I spent most of my time in an office with no windows drafting various documents for my supervising partner. Spoke to people other than him maybe 3 times a week.

My best advice: don't do it.

It was a small firm that mainly did public defense and child custody cases. We took on all kinds of cases though.

I made 45k as a 1st year associate. No idea how it compares to US levels, but it's shit compared to most other fields here. My electrician buddy made the same right after finishing his 3-year apprenticeship.

I suppose it pays off in the end, because the child custody partner at my firm took home roughly 300k and rarely worked more than 50 hours a week.

But getting to that level is such a grueling experience that you really need a compelling vision to carry you through.

Why are you not willing to move? I'd imagine if you don't have any decent law schools near you, there probably aren't that many desirable jobs in legal either.
