How does one do proper research on finding out how to negotiate salary for a small, relatively young company with little public info?

I somehow managed to do well on a phone interview, and now I have an in-person interview coming up soon. Hopefully it'll be the last interview. I'm fairly confident I can get this job, I know the position and could handle it with relative ease, but the salary worries me. with 90% of companies its easy enough to infer thanks to glassdoor combined with payscale.com. but this company im interviewing with has only one unrelated director salary ($120kish), and two positive reviews. and, the position im interested in seems to vary widely in pay from company to company. ill list as much info as i can about the company and myself:

- the position is in NYC as a Video Producer/Editor.
- i dont want to name the exact company but they're a sports related media group that create brand content for youtube creators, about 100 people in the whole lot, less than 5 years old. seem to be relatively profitable (read somewhere they got 20M in funding last year).
- my current position is with a large, big-name camera company as a video specialist. salary is 60K. been here for exactly 12 months.
- graduated last year from a no-name school with a film degree.
- three internships before that.

help??

research average wage for the area in your field.
ask for that exact sum.
after a year or two when you proven yourself to the company you go and renegotiate.

unless you have significant previous experience there is no other way.

also forgot. that typical salary i see for "producer" roles in nyc range anywhere from 40k to 80k.

would it be unreasonable to mention my current salary if they gave some crazy lowball number like 40k or less?

If they give you a satisfactory offer you can counter. Feel free to say something to the effect of what you currently earn is more, and for it to be worthwhile you would be looking for a similar or larger amount. If it is substantially lower they might not be willing to compromise so much, but in business negotations it boils down to leverage, and having a larger salary currently is leverage in your favour.

forgot to mention this in the OP and related to your comment:

i would just ask for the median but the issue is the median varies a ridiculous amount, at least by what i can tell from indeed
>>1249824
do I let the employer make the first number or do I give a number if they ask? do i mention my current earnings or leave it ambiguous if they offer a low number and Im open to counter?

glassdoor related companies?

>not asking salary up front
wtf is wrong with you
>>
>>1251402
>asking about salary immediately

sounds like a bad idea to me. i dont want to come off as greedy and only caring about the money (even if that is the case, still have to play the game). sounds more like a good way to get autofiltered out.

sorry didnt realize you were a bitch. Employers love to hire bitches instead of people who are confident in their skills and what they are worth.
bring it up with the recruiter before the 2nd interview op
>>
>>1251445
nah thats retarded to bring it up right away. though ill bring it up at the end of this coming interview if i dont hear anything about it

see you at the bottom

Don't ask for the median. The company likes you; that was the point of the interview. Now they need to see how much you cost.

If you just ask for the median, they're going to know that's exactly what you're doing. They have access to that same information. What they don't have access to is the total depth of your knowledge and competency. The first real inkling they'll have of your value is the number you're going to give them.

/biz/ operates on a weird mixture of autism and ignorance. They forget about the human component. If I have two people with identical résumés in front of me, and one asks for $10,000 below median, the other for $10,000 above; I'm going to hire the latter. Most on /biz/ would hire the former. My perception is that the cheaper hire feels inadequate or is desperate for some reason that I missed. The latter knows his worth. Confidence is attractive to employers.

My advice would be to ask for a bit above median; just be sure to justify it. Anything you say will work, really. Just be sure to do it with confidence.
