And yes, I am working at a grocery, a co op, and going to school. My thinking was that if the co op fell through i still had a job and can say i was employed at the grocery the whole time. fit nicely into my schedule

I regret having not worked the summer I was 18 at least. I was unemployed (albeit in school or going to school the next semester) and wasting time

pls no bully

Inspiring stuff Anon, that's a winding path but you made it. Can you talk about how you got into BI? My degree is mechanical engineering but I want to move towards business intelligence/analytics.
>>
>>1178554
When I applied for IBM I approached it like any other SQL developer type job. And the work I was doing for the non profit was helpful because it was heavy on data modeling and product design/management.

That IBM job was what propelled me into the world of BI/data sciences.

The non profit job was what set me up to succeed.

I was responsible for finessing stored procs and views for the existing suite of apps. I was responsible for designing ETLs to import new partner data. I was responsible for engaging potential new partners and convincing them to collaborate and share data. I was responsible for providing executive reporting and even had to provide charts and testimony to the US Congress once. And, I was responsible for modeling and designing an entire new backend data model for a major upgrade.

Oh. Plus backups, uptime, stats and index management, etc. DBA type stuff.

To say I wore a lot of hats would be an understatement.

I did all this for $45,000/year.

One might say I was overworked and underpaid; I prefer to say I was paid $45,000/year to get an education.

But yea. That job set me up for the IBM job.

IBM gave me focus and clarity on where to take my career.

Next steps are either architect or director .. probably architect. Then VP.

Then I'm starting my own company. I have a crazy awesome idea, and have begun development and modeling at home.

That is my story. Thanks to never having any debt due to parents who were far too good for me I have managed to secure myself a comfortable position for the foreseeable future. Nepotism and cheating are always the best ways to get ahead in life.

Yeah. Still a good haul after exorbitant California taxes and living expenses.

I can also confirm that >>1178518 who is backpedaling on his salary probably really did get a 100k offer from Google. That's a very standard offer for someone who just got their bachelor's degree.

I uh ...

I'm a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer for a quiet telecom with massive hardware footprint in Los Angeles and the Bay Area.

I'm personally responsible for huge initiatives and even get called in for conversations with our teams Director, VPs of Sales, and the CIO.

I'm fine.

IBM was .. bureaucratic as fuck but on point as fuck too. Once the shackles were unchained the habits I'd learned have proven to be really valuable.

I don't know why you gotta be a dick about it.

I started IBM in 2011 at a salary of $60,000/year. I started my current job in 2015 at a salary of just under $95,000/year.

That's almost a 60% growth in 5 years. That averages out to about a 15% gain per year. Per year.

I'm fine.
